WV Hope Scholarship Amount 2026-27: Funding Tiers, Deposit Dates, and How to Get 100%

How the Award Is Calculated

The Hope Scholarship amount changes every year because it tracks the statewide average net state aid per pupil from the prior fiscal year. For the 2026-27 school year, that figure is $5,435.62 per student — up from $5,267.00 in 2025-26 and $4,921.10 in 2024-25.

Every eligible student receives the same base amount regardless of grade level, household income, or whether they attend a private school, microschool, or learn at home. There is no means test and no lottery. The only variable is when you apply.

The Four Funding Tiers

West Virginia uses a tiered system that reduces the award based on the application window in which you submit a complete application. That window determines your percentage of the full $5,435.62:

Application Window Funding Level Award Amount
March 2 – June 15 100% $5,435.62
June 16 – September 15 75% $4,076.72
September 16 – November 30 50% $2,717.81
December 1 – February 28 25% $1,358.91

The difference between the 100% tier and the 75% tier is $1,358.90 — more than enough to cover a full year of curriculum for many families. If you know you want the scholarship, applying before June 15 is worth prioritizing.

When the Money Arrives

Funds are deposited into your child's Hope account in two equal installments, not as a lump sum:

  • Tranche 1 (Fall): August 15
  • Tranche 2 (Spring): January 15

For families who apply after the March-June window, the first deposit arrives at the next scheduled tranche date after approval. A family approved in October under the 50% tier would receive their first deposit on January 15.

The money goes directly into the student's digital account on the Hope portal. The Board does not send checks or deposit cash into personal bank accounts.

What Happens to Unused Funds

Unspent money rolls over into the next school year automatically, as long as your child stays enrolled and you complete the annual renewal (the Continued Participation Confirmation by June 15). You do not need to spend every dollar by the end of the year.

If a student graduates, turns 21, or leaves the program, any remaining balance goes back to the state fund. Funds cannot be transferred to siblings.

Multiple Children

Each child gets their own account with their own $5,435.62 allocation. A family with three eligible children applying in the 100% window would receive $16,306.86 total. Funds stay separated — you cannot pool them across siblings or use one child's balance for another child's expenses.

Securing the Full Amount

The simplest way to protect your family's full award is to submit a complete application by the June 15 cutoff. That means gathering your documents early: a state-certified birth certificate (hospital certificates are rejected), proof of residency, and your child's WVEIS ID number from the county board of education.

The WVEIS ID request is the step that catches many families off guard. Processing times vary by county, so starting that request in February or early March gives you time to receive the number before the application window closes.

For a complete walkthrough of the application, required documents, and spending rules, the West Virginia Hope Scholarship Parent Guide covers every step from WVEIS ID request through year-end assessment.
