Hope Scholarship WVEIS ID: How to Get Your Child's Student Number

What the WVEIS ID Is

The WVEIS (West Virginia Education Information System) number is a unique student identifier assigned by the state. It tracks enrollment and state aid allocation for every student in West Virginia — public, private, and homeschool.

You cannot complete a Hope Scholarship application without one. The portal requires the WVEIS ID during the application process, and the Board uses it to verify your child's status and process funding.

Who Already Has One

If your child has ever been enrolled in a West Virginia public school — even briefly — they already have a WVEIS ID. You can find it on old report cards, enrollment paperwork, or by calling the school's front office.

Children who have never attended public school — lifelong homeschoolers, current private school students, or children entering kindergarten for the first time — will not have one. You need to request it.

How to Request a WVEIS ID

Contact your local county board of education. Each of West Virginia's 55 counties has its own office. You can find contact information on the West Virginia Department of Education website or by searching for "[your county] board of education West Virginia."

When you call or email, explain that you need a WVEIS number assigned for your child so you can complete a Hope Scholarship application. They will need:

  • Your child's full legal name
  • Date of birth
  • Your county of residence
  • Your contact information as the parent or guardian

Some counties have a specific form for this request. Others handle it informally by phone or email. Ask the office directly what they need from you.

How Long It Takes

Processing times vary by county. Ask your local county board how long it expects assignment to take, and start early enough to receive the number before your application cutoff.

What to Do If the County Is Slow

Start the WVEIS request as early as possible — ideally in February, before the March 2 application window opens. This gives you a buffer without risking your 100% funding tier.

If the county's expected processing date passes without a response:

  • Call the county office again and ask for a status update and a specific timeline
  • Send a follow-up email so you have a written record of your request and their response
  • For questions about the Hope application process, contact the State Treasurer's Office at [email protected]

Keep a record of your request dates and follow-ups in case you need to discuss a delay with the county board or the State Treasurer's Office.

After You Receive It

Once you have the WVEIS ID, enter it into the Hope portal as part of your application. Keep the number saved — you will need it for annual renewals and assessment submissions. It does not change from year to year.

The West Virginia Hope Scholarship Parent Guide covers the full WVEIS request process alongside every other step of the application, including document checklists and a timeline planner to keep you ahead of county processing delays.
