Utah Fits All Technology Expenses: Computer Limits, Hardware Rules, and What's Allowed

Buying a laptop or tablet with Utah Fits All funds is allowed — but the rules are tighter than most families expect. Two statutory limits apply, and hitting either one means the purchase is rejected and you're paying out of pocket.

The Two Hardware Limits

$1,500 per device. Laptops, desktop computers, and digital learning devices are capped at $1,500 each. A $1,499 Chromebook is within the price cap, subject to the other program requirements; a $1,600 MacBook Air exceeds the cap.

One purchase every three calendar years per student. You can buy one qualifying device per child every three years. If you purchased a laptop in 2025, the next device purchase for that child isn't eligible until 2028.

These limits are per student, not per household. If you have three children on the scholarship, each can receive one device within their own three-year cycle.

What Counts as Educational Technology

Beyond hardware, educational software and online subscriptions fall under the general approved categories and must serve an explicit educational purpose. The $1,500 and three-year limits apply to hardware. Examples include:

  • Online curriculum platforms and learning management systems
  • Educational apps and subject-specific software
  • Standardized test preparation programs
  • Typing, coding, and digital literacy tools

The distinction is hardware versus software. Software subscriptions are reviewed under the general approved categories; the hardware limits above do not apply to them.

Common Technology Rejection Scenarios

A device purchase gets rejected when:

  • The price exceeds $1,500 (even by a dollar)
  • The student already received a device within the current three-year window
  • The receipt doesn't specify the device is for educational use — a generic "electronics" description triggers review
  • Do not assume that separating accessories from a device changes how the program applies the $1,500 per-device cap; check the purchase category before buying a bundle.
