Utah Fits All Scholarship for Private School: How the $8,000 Award Works

The private school track of the Utah Fits All Scholarship gives families the largest award the program offers — $8,000 per student per year. That's a significant offset against tuition at most Utah private schools, but the rules for qualifying schools, spending, and disbursement are different from the home-based track.

Award Amounts for Private School Students

Private school track students receive $8,000 annually, regardless of age. This is higher than the home-based track, which pays $4,000 for ages 5–11 and $6,000 for ages 12–18. The reasoning is straightforward: private school tuition is the largest single expense in the program.

Disbursements arrive in two equal installments — $4,000 by July 31 and $4,000 by December 31.

What Counts as a Qualifying Private School

The school must be an approved qualifying private school registered with the program. Microschools that meet private school classification requirements also qualify. The school itself can apply to become a qualifying provider through the Odyssey platform by submitting business documentation, verifying educational qualifications, and ensuring all instructional personnel complete criminal background checks.

If your target school isn't yet listed on the Odyssey marketplace, ask the school's administration to register as a provider. Some newer or smaller private schools haven't gone through the onboarding process.

What Private School Families Can Spend On

Beyond tuition, private school track families can use remaining funds for the same approved expense categories as home-based students:

  • Curriculum and supplementary textbooks
  • Tutoring (with background-checked tutors)
  • Educational software and subscriptions
  • Standardized testing fees
  • Educational therapies from licensed providers

The same restrictions apply: extracurricular spending is capped at 20% of the award ($1,600 on the private school track), PE spending at a separate 20%, and computer hardware at $1,500 per device once every three years. Ski passes, furniture, musical instruments, and parent wages are prohibited.

Private School vs. Home-Based: Choosing Your Track

The decision isn't just about money. Private school track students attend an approved qualifying private school with a set schedule and teacher-led instruction. Home-based scholarship students manage their own curriculum with more flexibility but accept additional accountability — annual portfolio submissions or standardized test scores by May 31, plus full spending oversight through the Odyssey platform.

Both tracks offer the same eligibility requirements and priority tiers. Starting with the 2026–27 academic year, both tracks also grant access to public school athletics and extracurricular activities in the student's resident district under HB 467.
