$0 Texas TEFA — Quick-Start Checklist

TEFA Disbursement Timeline: When Do Texas Education Freedom Account Funds Arrive?

After navigating the application, uploading documents, and surviving the priority lottery, the question every TEFA family asks is the same: when does the money actually show up?

The answer depends on whether you're on the homeschool or private school track.

Homeschool Disbursement: One Lump Sum

Homeschool accounts receive their full $2,000 allocation in a single deposit on July 1. There are no quarterly installments — the entire year's funding lands in your Odyssey digital wallet at once.

This means you can make marketplace purchases starting July 1 for the upcoming school year. The funds remain available throughout the academic year and any unspent balance rolls over to the following year automatically.

Private School Disbursement: Three Tranches

Private school accounts follow a quarterly schedule tied to enrollment verification:

Tranche Date Percentage Amount (Base $10,474)
First July 1 25% $2,618.50
Second October 1 25% $2,618.50
Third February 1 50% $5,237.00

The back-loaded schedule (50% in February) is deliberate. It ensures families maintain enrollment through the school year before receiving the majority of funding. Each tranche requires that the student still be enrolled in the designated accredited private school.

Special education accounts (up to $30,000) follow the same percentage schedule with larger dollar amounts.

What If Funds Don't Arrive on Time

If your account shows an award but a scheduled deposit has not arrived, check the Odyssey portal for pending verification flags or document requests, then use the current support options listed there.

Planning Around the Schedule

For homeschool families, knowing the July 1 date means you can plan curriculum purchases for the fall. Check which vendors are available on the Odyssey marketplace before the funds arrive — there's no reimbursement for out-of-pocket purchases, so every dollar needs to flow through the platform.

For private school families, the quarterly schedule creates a practical gap: if tuition is due in full by August but only 25% of TEFA arrives in July, the remaining balance is your responsibility until October and February tranches arrive. Factor this into your enrollment agreement.

The Texas Education Freedom Accounts Parent Guide includes a month-by-month planning calendar and spending strategies matched to the disbursement schedule.
