LA GATOR and TOPS Scholarship: Can You Keep College Funding Eligibility?
TOPS is a separate college scholarship program. For families considering LA GATOR, the question isn't just whether their child qualifies for K–12 funding today. It's whether accepting GATOR changes the path to college funding later.
How TOPS Works for Home-Educated Students
The Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) provides university scholarships to eligible Louisiana students. Home-educated students' eligibility depends on which legal education category they fall under and the separate TOPS requirements.
Under the BESE-Approved Home Study program (R.S. 17:236.1), students may qualify for TOPS subject to its requirements. The Home Study pathway is identified as TOPS-eligible.
Under the Private School Not Seeking State Approval route (R.S. 17:236), students are identified as ineligible for TOPS while under that classification. If a student changes to another education pathway, confirm current TOPS eligibility requirements with LOSFA.
What Happens to TOPS Under GATOR
GATOR creates a third legal classification: "LA GATOR Participating Student receiving Home-based Education" under R.S. 17:4037.1. The available program information does not establish that GATOR participation preserves TOPS eligibility, so confirm your child's path with LOSFA before switching.
LDOE notifies GATOR Home-based Education families about TOPS at two points: when the student enters the program and again between grades 8 and 12. Treat these notices as a prompt to confirm current eligibility and documentation requirements with LOSFA.
The GATOR materials call for high school transcript submissions through state systems and annual standardized testing. Confirm with LDOE and LOSFA which records and submission steps apply to your child; the notices alone are not a guarantee of TOPS eligibility.
The Strategic Considerations
Timing matters. If your child is in elementary or middle school, you have time to confirm how each education pathway affects future TOPS eligibility. If your child is already in high school, confirm transcript and documentation requirements before switching into GATOR.
The BESE Home Study track is identified as TOPS-eligible. GATOR participation has separate notices and transcript requirements, but those do not by themselves establish TOPS eligibility. Confirm the applicable process with LOSFA.
The financial comparison is worth doing. GATOR provides $5,243–$15,253 per year during K–12. Compare that funding with the TOPS award your student may qualify for, using current eligibility rules and award amounts.

What to Watch
GATOR is a new program, and the rules connecting it to TOPS are evolving. Families should monitor legislative sessions for any changes to how GATOR participation interacts with TOPS eligibility. LDOE's notifications at program entry and during the grade 8–12 window are the primary mechanism for staying informed.
For families who prioritize TOPS, the BESE-Approved Home Study pathway is identified as eligible subject to TOPS criteria. Before changing to GATOR, confirm with LOSFA whether your student's circumstances and records preserve eligibility.
The Louisiana GATOR Scholarship Parent Guide includes a side-by-side comparison of TOPS requirements under each education pathway and a decision framework for families weighing K–12 GATOR funding against long-term college scholarship eligibility.
