LA GATOR Testing Requirements: Assessments, Transcripts, and Compliance for Home-Based Students
If you're coming from the BESE-Approved Home Study program, where portfolios satisfy the annual progress requirement, GATOR's testing mandate is a significant shift. Under Bulletin 133 (§1525), every LA GATOR participating student must complete annual standardized assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics. The listed GATOR options are standardized assessments, not portfolios or teacher evaluations.
Which Tests Qualify
GATOR families have two options for meeting the assessment requirement:
State LEAP tests. These are the same assessments used in Louisiana's public school accountability system. They test the Louisiana Student Standards in ELA and math at each grade level.
BESE-approved nationally norm-referenced tests. This includes standardized assessments like the Iowa Assessments, Stanford Achievement Test (SAT-10), and TerraNova. These must be administered by an approved participating school or service provider — you can't order the test yourself and administer it at home.
The key difference from traditional Home Study: under R.S. 17:236.1, you can submit student work portfolios as your annual progress evidence. Under GATOR, portfolios don't qualify. The state requires a standardized test score, period.
How Test Scores Are Used
Individual test scores for GATOR home-based students are held confidentially by LDOE and aren't published publicly.
What LDOE does with the data is aggregate it. Bulletin 133 requires reporting overall GATOR program performance to the legislature. Your child's individual score becomes part of a statistical pool that informs legislative decisions about program funding and expansion. It doesn't trigger an individual compliance action unless it's combined with other non-compliance factors.
Skipping the annual assessment requirement means the student has not met a stated program obligation. The source material does not describe an automatic penalty for a missed test, so follow any notice or instructions from LDOE.
Transcript Requirements for High School Students
GATOR materials call for high school transcript submissions through state systems. This matters for students planning for a high school diploma recognized by Louisiana institutions or considering TOPS scholarship eligibility.
LDOE notifies GATOR families about TOPS at program entry and again between grades 8 and 12. Confirm current transcript requirements and what records to include with LDOE and LOSFA.
For families who've been homeschooling under the nonpublic school route — which has no state transcript requirement — this may be a new obligation. Ask LDOE for the current transcript format and recordkeeping instructions.

The Testing Calendar
Assessment dates depend on the LEAP calendar or the approved test provider. Check current LDOE instructions for test completion and score-reporting deadlines.
Planning matters because approved test administrators may have limited availability. If you're using a participating school or service provider to administer a norm-referenced test, book the session early — especially in areas with a high concentration of GATOR home-based students.
What Testing Means for Your GATOR Decision
For families who object to standardized testing on principle, GATOR's assessment mandate is a non-negotiable dealbreaker. The BESE-Approved Home Study pathway preserves the portfolio option, and the nonpublic school route requires no state-mandated assessment at all.
For families who are comfortable with annual testing and see it as a reasonable tradeoff for $5,243–$15,253 in education funding, pick a qualifying test, schedule it through an approved administrator, and follow current LDOE instructions for reporting scores.
The Louisiana GATOR Scholarship Parent Guide includes a compliance calendar that maps out testing deadlines alongside renewal windows and quarterly disbursement schedules, so nothing falls through the cracks during the school year.
