LA GATOR Scholarship Program: What Louisiana Parents Need to Know for 2026–2027
More than 39,000 students applied during LA GATOR's first year, but limited funding restricted participation to approximately 6,000 students. The rest landed on a waitlist with no guarantee of a second chance. If you're looking at this program for 2026–2027, understanding how it actually works — not just the headline promises — is the difference between securing thousands of dollars for your child's education and watching the funding window close.
What the LA GATOR Scholarship Program Actually Is
LA GATOR stands for Louisiana Giving All True Opportunity to Rise. Governor Jeff Landry signed Act 1 into law in June 2024, replacing the old Louisiana Scholarship Program (LSP) voucher system with an Education Savings Account model. Instead of the state paying a school directly, each approved student gets a digital account loaded with state funds. Parents spend those funds through the Odyssey platform on tuition, curriculum, tutoring, therapy, technology, and other approved educational expenses.
The program is administered by the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) with BESE setting the regulatory rules under Bulletin 133. Odyssey Education runs the digital spending platform where all transactions happen.
The critical distinction from the old LSP: GATOR isn't limited to private school tuition. It covers home-based education, tutoring services, educational therapy, technology, curriculum materials, and even dual-enrollment college courses. That flexibility is what draws homeschool and hybrid families in — but it comes with conditions most parents don't discover until after they've applied.
How Much Funding Each Student Gets
Award amounts are tied to the state's Minimum Foundation Program (MFP) per-pupil allocation. For the current program year:
- Standard base award (households above 250% FPL): $5,243
- Low-income base award (households at or below 250% FPL): $7,626
- Students with disabilities receive tiered add-ons on top of the base, pushing awards as high as $15,253
Funds arrive in four quarterly installments deposited into the student's Odyssey account. Unspent money rolls over from quarter to quarter and year to year, as long as the student stays enrolled and re-verifies eligibility annually.
The Three-Phase Expansion Plan
GATOR is rolling out eligibility in stages:
Phase 1 (2025–2026): Income at or below 250% FPL. Prioritizes returning LSP students, incoming kindergartners, prior public school students, and students with disabilities. The legislature appropriated $43.5 million — about half what the governor requested — so most eligible families ended up waitlisted.
Phase 2 (2026–2027): Income threshold rises to 400% FPL (roughly $124,800 for a family of four). The application window ran March 1–16, 2026. The legislature targeted $93–100 million in funding.
Phase 3 (2027–2028): Universal eligibility for all Louisiana K–12 residents, regardless of income. But funding still depends on annual legislative appropriations, so universal eligibility doesn't guarantee universal funding.

What Changed for 2026–2027
Phase 2 brought three operational shifts parents need to track. First, the income ceiling rose from 250% to 400% FPL. Second, the priority system gives top placement to returning GATOR recipients from the prior year, meaning families who got in during Phase 1 have a structural advantage. Third, the application window remained narrow — March 1–16 — and within each priority tier, awards are distributed by submission timestamp. Families who submitted early on March 1 had an earlier timestamp within their priority tier than those who waited until March 15.
The Homeschool Legal Catch
This is where most homeschool families get tripped up. Louisiana law prohibits you from simultaneously participating in GATOR and maintaining status under either the BESE-Approved Home Study program (R.S. 17:236.1) or the Private School Not Seeking State Approval route (R.S. 17:236). If you accept a GATOR award for home-based education, your child's legal classification changes to "LA GATOR Participating Student receiving Home-based Education" under R.S. 17:4037.1.
That new classification comes with mandatory annual standardized testing in ELA and math, required instruction in four core subjects, attendance tracking and truancy reporting, and all purchases routed through the Odyssey marketplace. You keep your choice of curriculum and tutors — but you lose the unregulated freedom that traditional home study offers.
For families weighing that tradeoff, we put together a complete guide to navigating the GATOR application, spending rules, and legal status changes so you can make the decision with full clarity before the next window opens.
What Happens If You Don't Get Funded
Unfunded applicants land on a waitlist with no automatic rollover. If your family ends up there, you'll need to reapply during the next year's application window. Your waitlist position doesn't carry forward. The only way to guarantee continued funding is to get an award, stay enrolled, and renew during the annual window — which earns you Priority Tier 1 status for subsequent years.
The competitive dynamics are real: more than 39,000 applied in year one, approximately 6,000 students were funded, and roughly 5,200 of those awards went to students transitioning from the legacy LSP program. The remaining funded slots were far fewer than the demand.
Getting This Right the First Time
The LA GATOR program puts serious money on the table — $5,243 to $15,253 per student, per year. But the narrow application windows, timestamp-based prioritization, and legal status requirements mean that preparation matters as much as eligibility.
The Louisiana GATOR Scholarship Parent Guide walks through every step: determining your priority tier, assembling documents before the portal opens, understanding what the money can and can't buy, and deciding whether the tradeoff between funding and autonomy is right for your family.
