How to Renew the LA GATOR Scholarship: Deadlines, Priority Rules, and What Changes in Year Two
Your child's LA GATOR account does not roll over automatically. Every spring, you have to log back into Odyssey and actively renew. Failure to renew by the deadline terminates participation and forfeits reserved funds.
That sounds harsh, but there's an upside: returning students sit at the very top of the priority ladder. Understanding how renewal works puts you in a stronger position than nearly every new applicant.
When and How to File for Renewal
For 2026–27, the renewal window ran March 1 through March 16, 2026. Renewals and new applications use the annual Odyssey window; confirm each year's dates with LDOE or Odyssey. You file through the Odyssey Family Portal at la.withodyssey.com, the same platform you used for your initial application.
During renewal, LDOE re-verifies your eligibility. That means your household income, Louisiana residency, and student enrollment status are all checked again. If your income changed since last year, your award tier might shift. For 2026–27, a household above 250% FPL but at or below 400% FPL falls in the standard $5,243 base category rather than the $7,626 low-income category; funding still depends on available appropriations.
Keep your documents current before the window opens. Have your most recent federal 1040, proof of Louisiana residency, and any updated IEP documentation ready to upload if the automated checks don't clear.
Returning Student Priority: Where You Stand
The statutory prioritization hierarchy under BESE Bulletin 133 gives returning LA GATOR recipients the highest priority — Tier 1, alongside grandfathered Louisiana Scholarship Program (LSP) students. That places returning recipients ahead of lower-tier new applicants when funds are limited, but it does not guarantee that every returning applicant is funded.
Here's the full priority order:
- Tier 1: Returning GATOR recipients and grandfathered LSP students
- Tier 2: Students with IDEA-verified disabilities or households at or below 250% FPL
- Tier 3: Siblings of current GATOR participants
- Tier 4: All other eligible applicants
Within each tier, funding is distributed by submission timestamp. So even as a returning student with top priority, filing early in the March 1–16 window is still the safest move — especially if total legislative funding falls short of demand again.
What Changes Between Year One and Year Two
The core mechanics stay the same: quarterly disbursements into your Odyssey account, purchases through approved marketplace vendors, mandatory annual assessments in ELA and Math. But a few things shift.
Unspent funds roll forward. If you didn't use your entire allocation in Year 1, the balance carries into Year 2 as long as you successfully renew. Funds accumulate across quarters and across years — they're not "use it or lose it" on a per-year basis.
Your award amount may change. The base award is tied to the prior year's Minimum Foundation Program (MFP) per-pupil allocation, which the legislature recalculates annually. If the MFP goes up, your award goes up. If your family's income bracket shifted, the FPL adder ($2,383) may appear or disappear.
Renewals use the annual application window. Submit the renewal information required by Odyssey during the window posted for that year. The system recognizes funded returning students for Tier 1 priority.
Inactivity triggers closure. If your account sits with no qualifying purchases for two consecutive years, LDOE sends a 60-day notice. If you don't respond, they close the account and reclaim the funds. Avoiding two consecutive years without a qualifying purchase prevents this inactivity trigger.

What Happens If You Don't Renew
Missing the renewal deadline is permanent for that funding year. Your account doesn't get frozen or put on hold — it's terminated. Unspent funds revert to LDOE. To get back into the program, you'd need to submit a brand-new application during the next annual window, and you'd enter as a new applicant at whatever priority tier your circumstances qualify for — not as a returning student.
The same thing happens if your child re-enrolls in a public school, your family moves out of Louisiana, or your child graduates. Any of these events closes the account immediately, and remaining funds go back to the state.
Planning for a Smooth Renewal
Start preparing in February. Verify that your residency documents are current, check whether your household income crossed any FPL thresholds, and make sure your child's disability documentation (if applicable) reflects current evaluations. Log into Odyssey before March 1 to confirm your account is active and your contact information is up to date.
