LA GATOR Scholarship Amount: How Much Funding Each Student Gets
The number on LA GATOR promotional materials is "up to $15,253 per student." What those materials don't tell you is that the $15,253 figure applies to one specific category — a low-income student with a Tier 3 disability classification. Most families receive considerably less. Here's the actual math.
The Base Award Formula
LA GATOR award amounts are calculated from the prior year's Minimum Foundation Program (MFP) state and local average per-pupil allocation. Two base levels exist:
Standard base award: $5,243 per year. This is what households above 250% of the Federal Poverty Level receive for a student without a documented disability. It's calculated at 55% of the MFP per-pupil amount.
Low-income base award: $7,626 per year. Households at or below 250% FPL receive this amount — the standard $5,243 base plus a $2,383 FPL supplemental adder. That's 80% of the MFP per-pupil amount.
For a family of four, the 250% FPL threshold is approximately $80,375. If your household income is below that line, your child gets the higher base automatically.
The Special Education Add-On
Students with verified disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) receive a tiered add-on calculated as a percentage of the standard base award ($5,243). The tiers are based on exceptionality classification:
Tier 1 disabilities — speech or language impairment, specific learning disability, mild intellectual disability, developmental delay. Add-on: $2,621.50 (50% of base).
Tier 2 disabilities — emotional disturbance, other health impairment (OHI), autism, moderate/severe intellectual disability, deaf/hard of hearing, orthopedic impairment, partial sight visual impairment. Add-on: $3,932.25 (75% of base).
Tier 3 disabilities — traumatic brain injury, multiple disabilities, deaf-blindness, blindness. Add-on: $7,627 (145% of base).
These add-ons stack with the low-income adder. A student at or below 250% FPL with a Tier 2 disability receives $5,243 + $2,383 + $3,932.25 = $11,558.25 per year. The statutory maximum — a low-income student with a Tier 3 classification — tops out at $15,253.
How the Money Arrives
Funds are deposited into the student's Odyssey account in four equal quarterly installments. If a participating private school requires a deposit to hold a seat, LDOE can transfer up to $1,000 before the school year starts, deducted from subsequent quarterly deposits. Students entering mid-year receive a prorated award for the remaining quarters.
Unspent funds roll over from quarter to quarter and year to year — as long as the student stays enrolled and the family renews during the annual window. But if an account sits inactive with zero qualifying purchases for two consecutive years, LDOE sends a 60-day notice. If the family doesn't respond, the account closes and the money goes back to the state.

What Most Families Actually Receive
The realistic range for most GATOR families is between $5,243 and $7,626. The $15,253 maximum is reserved for the intersection of low income and significant disability — a real category, but not the typical one. If your child doesn't have an IEP, the award is either $5,243 or $7,626 depending entirely on your household income relative to the FPL threshold.
For families with a child who has a diagnosed disability but no current IEP, the add-on funding isn't available until the disability is verified through a Local Educational Agency (LEA) evaluation record tied to the student's LASID. Getting that documentation in place before applying is what unlocks the higher tier.
The Louisiana GATOR Scholarship Parent Guide includes an award calculator worksheet that walks you through determining your exact base amount, FPL adder eligibility, and disability tier — so you know the real number before you start planning your education budget around it.
