CLEP Remote Proctoring: How to Take CLEP Exams From Home

Taking CLEP Exams Without Leaving the House

CLEP's remote proctoring option eliminates the biggest logistical headache homeschoolers face with credit-by-exam: finding a testing center. Instead of driving to a Pearson VUE or university testing site, your student takes the 90-minute exam on a personal computer while monitored through ProctorTrack's webcam-based system.

This matters for rural homeschooling families especially. The nearest CLEP testing center can be hours away, and some centers have limited availability or charge administrative fees of $15 to $40 on top of the $97 College Board exam fee. Remote proctoring eliminates the center fee entirely.

Technical Requirements

ProctorTrack has specific hardware requirements that trip up some families:

  • Windows desktop or laptop only — macOS, Chromebooks, iPads, and Linux machines are not supported
  • Working webcam and microphone — built-in or external
  • Stable internet connection — wired is recommended over WiFi
  • Quiet, private testing space — the proctor monitors audio and video throughout the exam
  • Candidate must be at least 13 years old

The Windows-only requirement catches people off guard. If your homeschool runs on Macs or Chromebooks, you'll need to borrow or buy a Windows machine or go to a physical testing center instead.

Before exam day, your student downloads the ProctorTrack software, completes a system check, and does a test run. The software scans the room through the webcam, verifies the student's identity, and locks down the browser so no other applications can run during the exam.

What Exam Day Looks Like

The student logs into their College Board account, launches the exam through ProctorTrack, and shows their ID to the camera. The proctor verifies the testing environment — looking for notes on the wall, other people in the room, or additional devices.

During the exam, remote proctoring monitors the student and testing environment. Follow the current College Board and ProctorTrack instructions for room setup and permitted conduct. The exam is 90 minutes.

Score reporting follows College Board's current release schedule. College Composition includes essays graded by human readers, so check the current schedule if a deadline matters.

When a Physical Center Is Still the Better Choice

Remote proctoring works well for straightforward subjects like College Algebra, US History, or Introductory Psychology. But some students test better in a formal environment without the anxiety of being monitored by webcam in their bedroom.

If your student is a first-time CLEP test-taker, consider doing the first exam at a physical center to get comfortable with the format. Once they know what to expect, remote proctoring is a lower-friction option for subsequent exams.

Physical centers also remain the only option for families without a Windows computer, students under 13, or households where a quiet private testing space isn't reliably available.
