CLEP Passing Score: What You Need and What Colleges Actually Accept
The ACE-Recommended Credit Threshold
The American Council on Education (ACE) recommends a score of 50 on CLEP's 20-to-80 scaled scoring system as a baseline for awarding credit. This is a recommendation, not a universal College Board passing score.
But here's the catch: individual colleges set their own required scores, and many require higher than 50. A state flagship might want a 55 or 60 for certain subjects. Some competitive programs won't grant credit at all below a 60.
Before your student sits for any CLEP exam, check the specific credit policy at their target college. The College Board maintains a CLEP credit policy search tool, but it often lags behind institutional updates. Go directly to the college's testing services or registrar page for current requirements.
What CLEP Exams Cost in 2026
Each CLEP exam costs $97, paid to the College Board at registration. If your student tests at a physical testing center, the center charges its own administrative fee — typically $15 to $40 — on top of the College Board fee.
Remote proctoring through ProctorTrack eliminates the center fee, bringing the total to $97 per exam. And if your student completes the free Modern States preparation course and meets its 75% average across module quizzes and the final practice assessment, Modern States covers the $97 exam fee and reimburses the testing center administrative fee, making the entire process free.
The three-month retake rule is important for budgeting: if your student doesn't pass, they must wait 90 days before attempting the same exam again, and the fee is charged again.
The Full CLEP Subject List

Which Exams Give You the Most Value
Not all CLEP exams transfer equally. Focus on subjects that satisfy general education requirements at your student's target college — these have the highest acceptance rates:
- College Algebra and College Mathematics — widely accepted for the math general education requirement
- Introductory Psychology and Introductory Sociology — nearly universal acceptance at state universities
- Principles of Macroeconomics and Microeconomics — accepted at most public flagships
- US History I and II — broad acceptance, and the content overlaps heavily with AP US History
Over 2,900 colleges accept CLEP credit. But acceptance varies by department — a university might grant CLEP credit for general education but refuse it toward major requirements. Always verify at the department level, not just the institutional level.
