DSST vs CLEP: Which Credit-by-Exam Option Works Better for Homeschoolers
Two Exam Programs, Very Different Acceptance Rates
CLEP and DSST both let students prove college-level knowledge through a single exam instead of sitting through a semester-long course. Both are legitimate paths to real college credit. But they're not interchangeable — the colleges that accept one don't necessarily accept the other, and the subject coverage barely overlaps.
CLEP, run by the College Board, is the bigger and more widely accepted program. Over 2,900 colleges accept CLEP credit. The 34 exams cover core general education subjects — English, math, science, social sciences, and business fundamentals.
DSST, originally created for military personnel and now administered by Prometric, offers over 30 exams covering subjects CLEP doesn't touch — things like Personal Finance, Ethics in America, Principles of Supervision, and Introduction to World Religions. But DSST acceptance is far narrower. It's concentrated at military-friendly institutions, online universities, and degree-completion programs like Thomas Edison State University, Western Governors University, and University of Maryland Global Campus.
Cost Comparison
| CLEP | DSST | |
|---|---|---|
| Exam fee | $97 | $100 |
| Testing center fee | $15–$40 | $25–$50 |
| Remote proctoring | Yes (ProctorTrack) | Yes (Prometric) |
| Free prep + voucher | Modern States (can reduce total to $0) | No equivalent free program |
| Retake waiting period | 90 days | Check DSST's current retake policy |
The Modern States difference is significant. A student who completes the free Modern States course and meets the 75% quiz threshold gets a voucher covering the full $97 CLEP exam fee, plus reimbursement of the testing center administrative fee. DSST has no comparable subsidy program — every exam costs at least $100 plus the center fee.
Which Colleges Accept What
This is where the decision gets practical.
CLEP: Accepted at most state universities, large public systems, and many private colleges. Highly selective private universities (Ivy League, Stanford, MIT) generally don't accept CLEP for credit, but mid-tier and state flagship universities do. College Algebra, Introductory Psychology, US History, and Macroeconomics have the broadest acceptance.
DSST: Primarily accepted at military-friendly and adult-degree institutions. Traditional liberal arts colleges and competitive state flagships rarely accept DSST. If your student is targeting a four-year residential university, DSST credits may not transfer at all.
Before your student studies for either exam, check the specific acceptance policy at their target institution. Don't assume — call the registrar's office or testing services department and ask about the exact exam title.

When DSST Makes Sense
DSST fills gaps CLEP doesn't cover. If your student needs credit in personal finance, ethics, management, or criminal justice — and they're targeting a university that accepts DSST — it can be the right choice. Students heading to military-affiliated schools or online degree-completion programs will find DSST acceptance is strong.
DSST is also useful for upper-division credit in some subjects, which CLEP doesn't offer. A student who's already cleared general education through CLEP or dual enrollment might use DSST to knock out a business elective or social science upper-division requirement.
The Default Strategy for Most Homeschoolers
For most families targeting traditional four-year universities, start with CLEP. The acceptance is broader, Modern States makes it free, and the general education subjects align with what nearly every bachelor's degree requires.
Layer DSST on top only when you've confirmed acceptance at the target institution and the subject fills a specific gap in your student's degree plan.
