Step Up For Students Payment Schedule: When Quarterly Funds Hit Your Account
The Four Quarterly Payments
Step Up For Students receives state scholarship payments on these dates and credits student accounts within two weeks:
| Quarter | Step Up receives funds | Coverage Period |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 renewal students | August 1 | Start of school year |
| Q1 new students | September 1 | Start of school year |
| Q2, all students | November 1 | Fall semester continuation |
| Q3, all students | February 1 | Spring semester start |
| Q4, all students | April 1 | End of school year |
For 2026–27, Step Up For Students receives Q1 funds on August 1 for renewal students and September 1 for new students. It credits student accounts within two weeks of receiving the state payment.
What Delays Your First Payment
Several conditions can hold up the initial disbursement:
Incomplete withdrawal verification. Students transitioning from public school must have their formal withdrawal confirmed in the SFO portal by July 31. If the state enrollment database still shows the child as enrolled, funding is held.
Missing SLP (PEP). The Student Learning Plan must be submitted and accepted before funds flow. An incomplete or unsubmitted SLP blocks disbursement.
Document verification delays. If the SFO is still processing residency documents, diagnosis forms, or other required uploads, funding waits until the review clears.
SFO-to-FDOE submission timing. SFOs must submit their lists of verified, eligible students to the Florida Department of Education by cutoff dates (July 15 for 2026–27 fall funding). If your SFO hasn't submitted your child's verified status by the cutoff, funding is delayed.
Mid-Year Enrollment and Proration
Step Up For Students divides PEP funds into four equal quarterly amounts. Which scheduled payments a student receives depends on the program's application, acceptance, and eligibility deadlines; check the current scholarship schedule for the student's program and application type.

Cash-Flow Reality
Quarterly payments mean you receive your annual award in four chunks, not up front. For a PEP family receiving $8,000, that's roughly $2,000 per quarter. If you need to purchase a full-year curriculum set ($400+) in August, you're floating that cost until September at the earliest — and that's only if your first disbursement arrives on time.
Parents in online forums describe first-year cash-flow stress: floating personal funds for two to three months before the first payment and then waiting an additional 10 to 60 days for reimbursement processing on out-of-pocket purchases.
Strategies for managing the gap:
- Prioritize marketplace direct-pay vendors. Purchases through MyScholarShop or the SMP marketplace deduct from your balance immediately — no cash float required. Wait for Q1 funds to arrive, then order through the marketplace
- Phase purchases across quarters. Don't buy everything in August. Spread curriculum and materials purchases across Q1 and Q2 to match the funding timeline
- Submit reimbursements immediately after purchase. Don't batch receipts — submit each one within days of buying to start the processing clock early
- Budget for the float. If you're buying from vendors outside the marketplace, plan for the 10-to-60-day reimbursement wait as part of your household budget
Rollover Between Years
Unspent funds roll over automatically at the end of each fiscal year (June 30), as long as the account stays active and below the balance cap ($24,000 for PEP, $50,000 for FES-UA). You don't lose unused Q4 funds on July 1 — they carry forward into the next year's balance.
Accounts are closed and remaining funds revert to the state after two consecutive fiscal years (July 1 through June 30) with no spending activity.
