Idaho School Choice Tax Credit Amended Return: When and How to File One
When You Need an Amended Return
The timing mismatch between Idaho's tax filing season and the Parental Choice Tax Credit award cycle creates a common problem. The application window runs January 15 through March 15, and award notifications arrive by approximately April 15. But many families file their Idaho Form 40 in February or March — before they know whether their credit application was approved.
If you filed your Form 40 before receiving your award notification from the Idaho State Tax Commission, you must file an amended return to add the credit amount on Line 42. The Tax Commission specifically instructs families to do this. Without the amended return, your approved credit sits unused — the state won't automatically apply it to a return that was filed without claiming it.
How to File the Amended Return
Use an amended Form 40 and follow the Tax Commission's current amended-return instructions. The process:
- Wait for your award notification — it arrives through your TAP account, typically by mid-April
- Prepare a new Form 40 with the credit amount entered on Line 42 ("Parental Choice Tax Credit")
- Attach Form 39R (Idaho Supplemental Schedule) with your credit details
- Complete the amended-return sections as directed by the Tax Commission
- Submit the amended return using the Tax Commission's current filing instructions
The amended return replaces your original filing for credit purposes. The Tax Commission recalculates your refund with the credit included and issues the additional refund amount.
The Timing Trade-Off
You can avoid the amended return entirely by waiting to file your Form 40 until after you receive your award notification. If notifications arrive by mid-April and the Idaho filing deadline is April 15 (or later with an extension), the window is tight but workable.
The risk of waiting: if your return is complex or you use a CPA whose calendar fills up in March, delaying until mid-April can create its own stress. Some families prefer to file on time without the credit, then amend — it's two filings instead of one, but the original return is done on schedule and the amended return is a focused update.

Amended Return Refund Timing
The available program materials do not specify a standard processing time for an original or amended refund. The amended return is the step for claiming an award after filing the original return; check current Tax Commission guidance before budgeting around a deposit date.
If your original return generated a small refund (or you owed a small amount), the amended return's refund is the difference — which, for many families, is the full credit amount. A family with minimal state tax liability and a $5,000 approved credit could see a refund of nearly $5,000 from the amended return alone.
What the Amended Return Doesn't Change
Filing an amended return doesn't reopen your application or change your award amount. The credit was approved through the TAP application process; the amended return is purely the tax-filing mechanism to claim what you've already been awarded.
Your expense documentation, priority status, and award notification are all independent of the amended return. If the Tax Commission later reviews your claim, keep the receipts and other records that support the expenses claimed.
Avoiding the Issue in Future Years
After your first year claiming the credit, the timing gets easier. You'll know when notifications typically arrive and can plan your filing accordingly. Many families choose to:
- File a federal return early (if needed for a federal refund)
- Check Idaho's current filing-deadline and extension instructions if you plan to wait for the TAP award notification
- Wait for the TAP award notification
- File the Idaho return once, with the credit included, in late April or May
One return, no amendment, no extra processing delay. The Idaho Parental Choice Tax Credit Parent Guide includes a filing timeline that maps out exactly when to file (or wait) based on your application window and expected notification date.
