Pearson Accelerated Pathways Review: Is It Worth $5,400 a Year for Homeschoolers

What Pearson Accelerated Pathways Offers

Pearson Accelerated Pathways — formerly known as CollegePlus and Lumerit Education — sells a coached degree-acceleration service. A student gets a dedicated academic coach who maps out a custom degree plan using alternative credit sources: CLEP exams, ACE-recommended online courses, DSST exams, and partner institution coursework.

The pitch is that your student earns a bachelor's degree faster and cheaper than the traditional four-year path. The coach handles the logistics — which exams to take, which courses to complete, how credits map to the degree plan.

Two pricing tiers: roughly $5,400/year for 8 courses, or $7,500/year for unlimited course completions.

What Works

The core value is navigation. The alternative credit landscape is genuinely confusing — dozens of platforms, varying acceptance policies at different universities, financial aid traps, transfer credit limits. Having someone who knows the system build a custom roadmap saves families from trial-and-error mistakes.

Families who report the best outcomes tend to be those whose student is highly self-motivated, already committed to a specific degree-completion university (Thomas Edison State, Excelsior, WGU), and whose parents don't have the time or confidence to piece together a credit plan independently.

What Doesn't Work

The cost math. At $5,400–$7,500 per year, the coaching fee approaches or exceeds the tuition your student would pay at a state community college — where the credits are regionally accredited and are evaluated under the receiving university's transfer rules. If your state funds dual enrollment for homeschoolers, the tuition may be covered and the credits come from an accredited college rather than an ACE recommendation.

Partner institution lock-in. Pearson's degree roadmaps rely heavily on a narrow network of partner schools. If your student decides to transfer to a different university — or if a partner school changes its credit acceptance policy — the roadmap may unravel. Families who've switched target institutions mid-plan report significant credit loss.

ACE credit limitations. A substantial portion of the recommended coursework comes from ACE-evaluated platforms (Sophia, Study.com, and similar). Those credits transfer well to degree-completion schools but are broadly rejected by traditional state universities and selective institutions. If your student's plans change from "finish a degree at Thomas Edison" to "transfer to the state flagship," much of the completed coursework may not follow.

The DIY Alternative

Everything Pearson Accelerated Pathways does can be done independently by a motivated parent:

  • Credit planning: Check your target university's transfer credit policies. List the degree requirements. Map which requirements can be satisfied by CLEP, dual enrollment, or AP. Fill the gaps with coursework at the target school.
  • CLEP scheduling: Register at myclep.collegeboard.org. Complete the free Modern States course for a $0 voucher. Schedule the exam.
  • Dual enrollment: Contact your state's community college system. Check if homeschoolers qualify for state-funded tuition. Register.

The research takes time — probably 20–40 hours to build a solid plan. But that's a one-time investment, not a recurring $5,400/year subscription.

When Pearson Makes Sense and When It Doesn't

Consider Pearson if: Your student is committed to a degree-completion school that accepts ACE credit broadly, you don't have time to research credit options yourself, and the coaching fee is worth the convenience to your family.

Skip Pearson if: Your student is targeting a traditional state university or selective college (where ACE credits don't transfer), your state offers funded dual enrollment (which produces stronger credit for free), or you're comfortable doing the research yourself.

The College Credit Guide covers the same territory Pearson coaches navigate — credit-by-exam options, state-by-state dual enrollment access, transfer policies by institution type, and financial aid risk management — for a fraction of the annual coaching fee.
