Online School Credits on a Homeschool Transcript: FLVS, Outschool, and More
The Multi-Source Transcript
Most homeschool families today use a mix of parent-taught courses, online classes, co-op instruction, and dual enrollment. The transcript still needs to look like one unified document — not a patchwork of five different grade reports stapled together.
The challenge is that each online provider reports differently. Florida Virtual School (FLVS) issues official transcripts with course codes and credits. Outschool may provide a class grade report, but it does not issue a formal high-school transcript or assign high-school credit. Some platforms fall somewhere in between. Your job is to integrate all of these onto a single parent-issued transcript that presents a coherent academic record.
How to List Accredited Online Courses
When a course comes from a regionally accredited online provider — FLVS, BYU Independent Study, Laurel Springs, or a similar institution — list it on your transcript with the provider name attached.
Format options:
Provider column: Add a column to your transcript labeled "Provider" or "Institution." Parent-taught courses show your homeschool name. FLVS courses show "Florida Virtual School." This approach makes the source immediately clear.
Sectional grouping: Group courses by source. One section for "Parent-Directed Instruction," one for "Florida Virtual School," one for "Dual Enrollment — Valencia College." Each section carries its own provider header.
Footnote notation: Superscript numbers after course titles link to footnotes at the bottom: "¹Florida Virtual School (accredited by Cognia)."
Any of these works. The key is that the provider is identified. This shows where the grade came from and distinguishes provider coursework from parent-directed instruction.
For accredited providers, you can either use the grade they issued or convert it to your grading scale. Most families use the provider's grade directly. If the provider uses a different grading scale than yours (they use 90-100 = A, you use 93-100 = A), note both scales on the transcript or adopt the provider's grade as-is.
How to List Outschool and Non-Accredited Courses
Outschool is an online marketplace for live classes, not a school that awards high-school credit. Instructors may provide class grade reports, but the parent assigns the final homeschool grade and credit value. The same approach applies to many co-ops, private tutors, and informal online courses.
For these sources, the parent is the teacher of record. You are using the outside instructor's teaching and assessments as inputs into your grading, but you — as the homeschool administrator — assign the final grade and the credit value.
On the transcript:
- List the course under your homeschool name, not under "Outschool"
- Assign credit based on documented hours (120-150 hours = 1.0 credit, including the Outschool class time plus any supplementary work)
- Assign a grade based on the student's performance (the instructor's feedback, completed assignments, and your assessment of mastery)
You can mention Outschool in the course description document that backs up the transcript: "Instruction provided through Outschool by [instructor name]; supplemented with parent-directed reading and lab work." But on the transcript itself, the course lives under your school because Outschool is not the credentialing institution.

Florida Virtual School Specifics
FLVS is a public school option, and its relationship with homeschoolers is specific. Florida homeschoolers registered under the Home Education Program (HEP) can take individual FLVS courses without enrolling full-time. FLVS issues an official transcript for those courses.
When listing FLVS courses on your homeschool transcript:
- Use the exact course title from the FLVS transcript
- Use the grade FLVS issued
- Mark the provider as "Florida Virtual School"
- Keep the FLVS official transcript in your permanent file as backup documentation
Bright Futures uses a separate route for Florida home-education students based on required test scores and service hours, with service hours certified by the district. The handbook says home-educated students do not need to provide a transcript, so FLVS grades or weighting do not replace those requirements.
FLVS home-education students can take one or multiple courses while remaining home educated; FLVS does not issue their diplomas. The parent remains responsible for the home education program and diploma. Enrolling in an FLVS full-time public-school program is a separate school enrollment and follows its school or district graduation requirements.
Calculating GPA Across Sources
When courses come from multiple providers with different grading scales, you need a consistent method for calculating the cumulative GPA.
The simplest approach: convert every grade to your grading scale, then calculate. Define your grading scale clearly on the transcript (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, etc.), and apply it uniformly.
For weighted GPA, decide your weighting policy and apply it consistently. Common practice: Honors courses get +0.5 quality points, AP and dual enrollment courses get +1.0. Apply this regardless of where the course was taken — an AP course through FLVS gets the same weighting as an AP course you taught.
The Homeschool Transcript & Diploma Kit includes a GPA calculation worksheet that handles multi-source credits, a transcript template with provider identification fields, and course description templates for documenting outside coursework.
