Homeschool School Name for Transcript: What to Put and Why It Matters
You Need a School Name
Every transcript has an issuing institution. For public school graduates, it's the school name registered with the state. For homeschoolers, it's whatever you named your home education program — and yes, you get to choose it.
The name matters because it appears on the transcript and diploma and may be requested on college, financial aid, military, or employment forms. If documents that identify the program carry different school names, verification systems may flag the discrepancy and the applicant may need to explain it.
How to Choose the Name
Keep it straightforward. The name should sound like what it is — a school — without overreaching into territory that implies institutional accreditation you don't have.
Good options:
- Wilson Home Academy
- The Wilson School
- Wilson Family Academy
- Sunrise Homeschool
Avoid:
- Wilson University (implies higher education)
- Wilson Preparatory Institute (implies institutional accreditation)
- Wilson Christian School (fine if accurate, but check whether your state requires religious schools to register separately from homeschool programs)
Use your actual surname. It makes verification straightforward — a background check company contacting "Wilson Home Academy" and reaching a parent named Wilson immediately confirms the connection.
If your state's notice of intent or declaration of enrollment asked for a school name when you filed, use that same name. Consistency across state filings and graduation documents eliminates verification friction.
The Administrator Title
On the transcript and diploma, someone signs as the school's administrator. This is you — the parent directing the home education program. Use a title that matches what you functionally do:
- Administrator (most common)
- Director
- Principal
- Registrar (appropriate if you want to emphasize the records-management role)
The title doesn't convey any special legal authority — you hold diploma-issuing authority as the homeschool parent regardless of what title you use. The title exists so that an admissions officer or background check company reading the document knows who certified the record.

CEEB Code
Some college application and testing portals ask for a school CEEB code (a six-digit identifier assigned by the College Board). If asked, follow that portal's homeschool-specific instructions rather than assuming one code applies across admissions and testing platforms.
When you register for the SAT or ACT, select the homeschool school type and follow the testing platform's current instructions for any school code.
An umbrella school that serves as the legal school of record issues the consolidated transcript. Follow each platform's instructions about which school code to report; do not pair an umbrella's code with a parent-issued transcript.
Consistency Across Documents
Where a form or document asks for the school name, use the same name:
- Transcript
- Diploma
- Notice of intent or state filing
- SAT/ACT score reports
- College applications (Common App school name field)
- Military enlistment paperwork
- Employment applications
A mismatch — "Wilson Home School" on the transcript and "Wilson Academy" on the diploma — can look like two different schools. Background check companies and military credentialing offices may compare documents, and matching names can reduce the need to explain that two names refer to the same program.
FAFSA Homeschool Completion
For federal student aid, a student who completed secondary education in a home school setting that qualifies for an exemption from compulsory-attendance requirements under state law can meet the completion requirement (34 CFR 668.32(e)(4)). On the FAFSA, use the home-school completion option and follow the current form prompts; no GED or accredited diploma is required for this route.
What Background Check Companies See
When a future employer runs a credential check through HireRight, Sterling, or another screening firm, the screener may not find "Wilson Home Academy" in its usual school records. That's expected for a homeschool, where the parent or administrator serves as the registrar.
The parent or administrator can confirm enrollment dates and graduation status. Provide the signed transcript, diploma, state compliance documentation, and administrator contact information. Having a consistent, professional school name across all documents makes this exchange clean. A name that changes between documents makes it messy.
The Homeschool Transcript & Diploma Kit is built around consistency — the same school name, administrator title, and signature block carry through the transcript, diploma, and verification response documents so everything matches before your student needs to hand any of it over.
