Can You Use Arkansas EFA for Field Trips?

What's Approved: Local Educational Venue Admission

EFA funds can cover admission tickets to local educational venues — but the rules are narrow, and the boundaries are stricter than many parents expect.

Approved field trip expenses:

  • Day admission to educational venues: zoos, science museums, botanical gardens, natural history museums, planetariums, aquariums
  • Admission to historical sites and educational exhibits
  • Workshop or class fees at educational institutions (a museum pottery class, a nature center ecology programme)

These expenses fall under the extracurricular, physical education, and educational field-trip category, which is capped at 25% of the student's annual allocation. For a $7,208 award, that is $1,802 shared with sports, music, and other qualifying expenses in those categories.

What's Not Approved: The Line Is Clear

ADE draws a firm boundary around what constitutes an educational outing versus a personal trip or vacation.

Prohibited field trip expenses:

  • Out-of-state travel of any kind (even to an educational venue across the state line)
  • Hotel or overnight lodging
  • Meal expenses and restaurant purchases
  • Family fuel, mileage, and airfare
  • Family vacations that include educational stops
  • Amusement parks, movie theaters, and general entertainment venues

The out-of-state prohibition catches many homeschool families off guard. A day trip to the Memphis Zoo or a historical site in Tulsa — both within easy driving distance of many Arkansas families — would not be covered by EFA funds. The venue must be within Arkansas.

Family transportation to a field-trip venue is not listed as a qualifying expense. The separate transportation category covers travel by an approved provider directly to and from a participating school or provider, up to the state employee mileage rate and 25% of the student's allocation.

Submitting Field Trip Expenses in ClassWallet

Field trip admissions are typically out-of-pocket purchases, which means they go through the reimbursement workflow — the slowest approval path in ClassWallet.

For reimbursement requests submitted more than six months after the June 29, 2026 effective date of the current rules — after December 29, 2026 — ADE approval is required before a non-core expense is incurred.

For a smooth submission:

  1. Keep the admission receipt. It needs to show the venue name, date, individual ticket prices, and total cost.
  2. If the venue offers online ticket purchases with an emailed receipt, use that — digital receipts with all required fields process faster than phone photos of paper tickets.
  3. Add a brief academic justification: "Science museum visit for homeschool earth science unit" is sufficient.
  4. Submit the field trip receipt separately from other purchases. Bundling it with unrelated reimbursements slows the review.

Museum and zoo memberships are also eligible under the facility memberships category and can be a better value if you plan multiple visits. An annual zoo membership submitted once is simpler than submitting individual day-pass receipts throughout the year. The full membership cost counts against your 25% extracurricular cap.

Planning Field Trips Around the Budget

With the 25% cap shared across all extracurricular spending, field trip costs compete with sports, music, and enrichment activities for the same $1,802.

A practical approach: estimate your full-year extracurricular spending at the start of the school year. If your child is in a community sports league ($200-400) and taking ADE-approved music lessons ($600-1,200 annually), the remaining extracurricular budget for field trips may be quite limited.

Homeschool co-ops sometimes negotiate group admission rates that stretch the budget further. To bill the group rate directly, the co-op or venue needs ADE and ClassWallet approval before accepting EFA payments; confirm that the provider is approved before relying on direct billing.

The Arkansas EFA Parent Guide includes an expense tracking log with separate lines for extracurricular subcategories — so you can see at a glance how much of the 25% cap remains for field trips after other enrichment spending.
