Alabama Homeschool Funding: How Much the CHOOSE Act ESA Pays and How to Get It
What Alabama Actually Pays Homeschool Families
The CHOOSE Act Education Savings Account awards up to $2,000 per student per academic year for families on the home education track. That covers individual homeschoolers, cover school enrollees, and co-op participants.
There's a household cap: no matter how many children you homeschool, the total tops out at $4,000 per family per year. Two kids means $2,000 each. Three or four kids means you're splitting $4,000 among them.
For families with a child in a participating private school, the award is up to $7,000 per student (or actual tuition, whichever is less), with no family cap on the private school side. A household with one child in private school and one homeschooled receives $7,000 plus $2,000 in separate ClassWallet accounts.
This Isn't a Check in the Mail
The money never touches your bank account. ALDOR deposits funds into a ClassWallet digital wallet beginning July 1, and every purchase runs through that platform — either by paying an approved vendor directly or buying through the ClassWallet Marketplace.
No reimbursements. No cash withdrawals. No exceptions. If you buy curriculum out of pocket and try to get reimbursed later, ClassWallet will reject the request.
Anything unspent on June 30 goes back to the state. The funds don't roll over to the next year.
How This Compares to Other States
Alabama's $2,000 home-education award is below the roughly $7,000 per-student figures cited for programs such as Arizona and Florida in the market research. Those award amounts are a comparison point, not a like-for-like comparison of program rules.
The home education track imposes no state-mandated standardized testing, curriculum mandates, or academic reporting to ALDOR. Market research cites Arizona and Florida among states with ESA awards around $7,000 per student, but those award amounts are not a like-for-like comparison of program rules.

Who Gets the Money First
The CHOOSE Act runs a priority allocation when demand exceeds the state appropriation:
- Special needs students (IEP, ISP, or 504 plan) — first 500 credits reserved
- Returning families and siblings — priority renewal keeps your spot
- Military dependents in D/F-rated school zones
- Everyone else — ranked by income, lowest first
In 2025–2026, the program funded 18,483 accounts against a $100 million appropriation, with an additional $80 million expansion reserve going unused. There were 21,953 approved student applications that year.
The Application Basics
For 2026–2027, the renewal portal opened December 15, 2025, and the new-applicant portal opened January 2, 2026; both closed March 31, 2026. Applications were handled at chooseact.alabama.gov. You'll need proof of income (household AGI at or below 300% of the applicable FPL), Alabama residency, and student identification.
The income restriction sunsets starting with the 2027–2028 school year, when the program goes universal, subject to annual legislative appropriations.
The Alabama CHOOSE Act ESA Parent Guide breaks down the full funding structure — award amounts by educational setting, the family cap rules, a spending calendar to avoid the June 30 clawback, and strategies for stretching $4,000 across multiple children.
