When Homeschool Isn't Working: How to Reset and Get Back on Track

You planned the curriculum in August, bought the books, set up the schedule — and by October it had completely unravelled. Your child resists every lesson, you're weeks behind where the curriculum said you'd be, and you're quietly wondering whether you've made a terrible mistake.

This feeling is almost universal among homeschooling families in the first year, and surprisingly common in years two and three. The good news: being "behind" in a homeschool is almost never as catastrophic as it feels. The harder news: if something genuinely isn't working, it won't fix itself. You need to figure out what broke and why before you can reset.

Distinguish Between "Behind" and "Broken"

The first thing to separate is whether you're dealing with a pacing problem or a structural one.

Pacing problems are common and recoverable. Your math curriculum expected 45 minutes per day and your child needs 90. You took three weeks off for a family emergency. The history spine you chose was 200 pages too long for the year. These create gaps between where you are and where the curriculum planned you'd be — but they don't mean your child isn't learning. They mean the external schedule wasn't calibrated to your family.

Structural problems are deeper. Examples: your child has a learning difference that the curriculum isn't designed for; your teaching style and their learning style are fundamentally mismatched; the subject approach (textbook-heavy when they're a hands-on learner, or vice versa) creates daily friction that's consuming more energy than learning.

Identifying which problem you have determines the solution. Pacing problems respond to schedule adjustments and workload reduction. Structural problems need a curriculum switch, a methodological change, or professional evaluation.

The Honest Audit: Four Questions

Before you change anything, sit down and honestly answer these four questions.

1. What specifically isn't working?

Not "everything" — that's too broad to act on. Is it one subject? One time of day? One child while another is fine? The more specific you can get, the more targeted your fix can be. "My 13-year-old refuses to engage with any writing assignment" is actionable. "Homeschool isn't working" isn't.

2. How long has it been this way?

A rough two weeks after a holiday break, a new baby, or a move is normal nervous-system dysregulation. Three months of the same pattern is signal, not noise.

3. What's your child's experience of the problem?

Ask them directly, in low-stakes conversation away from school time. Their answer may surprise you. Many children who "won't do math" will tell you they feel stupid, or they don't understand why they're doing it, or they're bored because it's too easy. None of those problems are solved the same way.

4. What would "working" actually look like?

This is worth writing down. If you can't describe what success looks like in concrete terms — not "we'd all be happier" but "she'd complete her three math lessons per week without tears, and move from two-digit addition to simple multiplication by June" — you won't know when you've fixed it.

Common Fixes That Actually Work

Reduce the load before you redesign it

When homeschool is actively falling apart, the first instinct is often to overhaul everything: new curriculum, new schedule, new approach. Resist this. Instead, strip the schedule back to three non-negotiables per day — usually math, reading/language, and one subject the child actually likes — and do only those for two to four weeks. This relieves pressure, restores goodwill, and gives you time to diagnose properly before spending money on new resources.

Separate the academic work from the relationship

One of the well-documented challenges of parent-led homeschooling is that academic refusal becomes a relational standoff — your child isn't just resisting math, they're resisting you. If you're fighting the same battle every day and the relationship is getting strained, consider outsourcing one or two subjects. Online tutors, co-op classes, and community college dual-enrolment options for older students can take the subject off your plate while giving your child a neutral third party to work with.

Match the method to the learner, not the curriculum

Most packaged homeschool curricula are designed for a specific pedagogical approach — classical, Charlotte Mason, textbook-drill, or project-based. If you bought a classical curriculum for a child who needs to move, build, and apply before they can absorb abstract concepts, the mismatch will produce exactly the friction you're experiencing. This doesn't mean the child is behind; it means you picked the wrong tool.

Address the documentation gap now

One thing parents rarely consider when homeschool feels like it's failing: the records still matter. Even if you strip the schedule back to basics, keep tracking what your child does. For families with high schoolers, every week you don't document is a week that becomes hard to account for later when building a university application. A rough log — subject, resources used, approximate time — takes five minutes per day and protects you from a much larger headache in Grade 11 and 12.

"Way Behind" in High School: What It Actually Means for University

If your high schooler is behind in their homeschool, the stakes feel higher — and in some ways they are, because Canadian universities expect to see a coherent academic trajectory across grades 9-12. But "behind" relative to a packaged curriculum's schedule is very different from "behind" in terms of actual learning.

Canadian universities assessing homeschooled applicants aren't comparing your child's transcript to a week-by-week curriculum calendar. They're looking for evidence of Grade 12-equivalent knowledge in the prerequisite subjects for their program. A student who took an extra year to work through mathematics deeply, documented the progression clearly, and sat a standardized test (SAT, ACT, or AP exam) demonstrating the knowledge can present a stronger application than a student who rushed through material and can't demonstrate mastery.

The number of homeschooled students in Canada has grown from approximately 20,000 in 1997 to over 100,000 by 2019, and universities have developed specific review processes for non-traditional applicants. Many universities — including the University of Guelph, the University of Alberta, and Simon Fraser University — explicitly accept portfolio-based applications that don't require you to match a traditional timeline. What they require is documentation of what was learned and how it was assessed.

This means a mid-high-school reset, done thoughtfully, is survivable. The key is not to lose the documentation of what was accomplished before the reset.

When to Seek Outside Help

Some problems go beyond curriculum mismatches. If your child consistently avoids all written tasks, reads significantly below grade level despite regular practice, or shows persistent difficulty with math concepts that peers their age handle easily, get a learning assessment. Dyslexia, dyscalculia, and ADHD present differently in different children, and many homeschooled children reach middle school without a formal diagnosis because the homeschool environment compensated naturally — until the compensations stopped working.

Getting a diagnosis isn't failure. It's information. It changes which resources you use, which accommodations you can document, and in some cases which university accommodations your child will be entitled to request when they do apply.

The Reset Plan

If you've done the audit and you know homeschool needs a genuine reset:

  1. Strip to three subjects for 2-4 weeks.
  2. Talk to your child about what they want school to look like.
  3. Identify one specific thing that needs to change (method, curriculum, schedule, or outside support) and change only that.
  4. Keep documenting, even if it's just a brief daily log.
  5. Reassess in six weeks with the same four questions from the audit.

Most families who go through a structured reset report that the reset itself was the turning point — not because they found a magic curriculum, but because they stopped pretending the original plan was working and started responding to what was actually in front of them.
