NH Homeschool Middle School Portfolio: What Changes in Grades 6-8
Middle school is the point where New Hampshire homeschool portfolios change shape. The early elementary approach — photo-heavy, parent-narrated, built around read-alouds and hands-on projects — still works in sixth grade, but it starts to feel thin by eighth. At the same time, the high school approach — formal transcripts, credit calculations, course descriptions — is not quite appropriate yet.
Middle school occupies a transition zone. Your documentation needs to demonstrate more structured academic progress than a K-2 portfolio, but you are not yet building a college admissions record. Understanding what this looks like in practice prevents both under-documentation (which leaves families vulnerable at evaluation time) and over-documentation (which creates unnecessary work and anxiety).
What the Law Requires at Every Grade Level
RSA 193-A imposes identical evaluation requirements across all ages: an annual evaluation demonstrating educational progress "commensurate with the child's age, ability, and/or disability." There is no separate standard for middle schoolers versus elementary students. The statute requires a reading log and work samples — that baseline holds throughout the entire home education program.
What changes at middle school is not the legal requirement, but the practical nature of the evidence. A twelve-year-old's "work samples" are different from a seven-year-old's. Evaluators expect to see more independent written work, more defined subject boundaries, and clearer evidence that academic subjects are being taught with some structure — even if that structure is loose.
The Subject Summary: The Core of a Middle School Portfolio
The most useful addition to a middle school portfolio is the subject summary — a brief written overview of what was covered in each subject during the year. The NHHA recommends this format, and experienced evaluators look for it at the 6-8 level.
A subject summary for an eighth-grade science year might read:
Science (Earth Science focus): Covered plate tectonics, rock cycle, weather systems, and basic astronomy. Used [curriculum name] as the primary text. Completed six lab-style experiments including a homemade volcano simulation and a water filtration project. Supplemented with three National Geographic documentary units.
This paragraph takes five minutes to write and tells the evaluator everything they need to know. It does not need to be a formal report. It does not need to be more than a few sentences per subject. What it provides is clarity — proof that you taught a defined subject, not just scattered activities.
Write a subject summary for each of the eleven required subjects. At middle school, most families consolidate language arts into one summary covering reading, writing, spelling, and grammar; cover history and government together; and address constitutions as part of history. This is acceptable.
Work Samples at Middle School: What to Collect
The work samples section of a middle school portfolio should move toward demonstrating independent student output. This means:
Language arts:
- Essays, reports, or persuasive writing — at least two to three per year, showing the student is producing extended written work
- Completed book reports or literary analysis
- Grammar or composition exercises
- Evidence of a structured reading list (not just casual reading)
Mathematics:
- Representative tests or quizzes from a formal math curriculum, covering at least three points in the year (fall, winter, spring)
- Problem sets showing progression — if you started the year in pre-algebra and finished in algebra, the samples should reflect that arc
Science:
- Lab reports, experiment write-ups, or detailed observation notes
- Research summaries or project documentation
- Photos or descriptions of hands-on science work
History, government, and civics:
- Written timelines, short research papers, or structured book reports on historical topics
- Field trip records with a brief written reflection from the student
- Evidence of NH and US Constitution coverage — this can be a worksheet, a written summary, or a parent note describing a documentary or discussion
Health and physical education:
- A simple log of physical activities (sports, martial arts, hiking, swim team) with approximate frequency
- Notes on any health education — nutrition, safety, first aid discussions
Art and music:
- Photographs of completed art projects
- Documentation of music lessons, performances, or music study
- The statute requires "exposure to and appreciation of" — a concert program, a list of composers studied, or a photo essay of a museum visit all qualify

The Reading Log at Middle School
At this age, the reading log should be fuller than what you maintained in early elementary. A middle schooler reading independently should have a log reflecting that — twenty or more books per year is reasonable for an active reader, though there is no legal minimum.
The log should include title, author, and ideally the subject category (fiction, history, science, biography). This makes it easier for the evaluator to see that reading spans multiple domains, not just novels.
For students who read extensively across formats — audiobooks, long-form articles, digital texts — include those as well. Document what was genuinely read. An evaluator reviewing a sparse reading log for a twelve-year-old will have questions; an evaluator reviewing a rich one will have none.
Why Eighth Grade Is Different: Beginning the Transcript
Eighth grade is the right time to start maintaining a running transcript, even if it will not be used for college applications for another four years. Here is why:
By ninth grade, high school credits begin to accumulate. If you have not kept systematic records through middle school, you will be reconstructing your child's eighth-grade coursework retroactively when you need to demonstrate course progression for college admissions or dual enrollment. That reconstruction is harder than it sounds.
An eighth-grade transcript entry is informal — not a formal high school credit, but a record of what subjects were covered, which curriculum you used, and approximately how much time was devoted to each. When you formally begin the high school transcript in ninth grade, you will thank yourself for having this reference.
Some families begin awarding fractional high school credits in eighth grade for advanced work. If your eighth-grader completes a high school-level algebra course, that credit is legitimately recordable. Check with whichever college admissions framework you anticipate using — most NH universities are comfortable with this practice.
Evaluation Methods at Middle School
Portfolio review remains the most popular evaluation option at the middle school level, particularly for families using non-traditional curricula or accommodating learning differences. The evaluator meeting typically lasts thirty to sixty minutes, during which the teacher reviews the portfolio and has a brief conversation with the parent (and sometimes the student).
A well-organized middle school portfolio should be easy for the evaluator to navigate:
- A table of contents
- Your Notice of Intent acknowledgment letter
- A one-page parent narrative summarizing the year
- The reading log
- Subject summaries (one paragraph per subject)
- Work samples, organized by subject
If your portfolio is organized this way, an experienced evaluator can complete the review efficiently. A disorganized box of papers creates friction even when the academic content is solid.
Standardized testing is equally valid at middle school. Tests like the Stanford Achievement Test, Iowa Test of Basic Skills, or California Achievement Test are available for grades 6-8 and can be administered at home by the parent. Since the 2022 removal of the 40th percentile requirement, these tests carry no pass threshold — you administer the test and retain the results.
Special Considerations for Middle School
Dual enrollment and outside classes: If your middle schooler takes outside classes — co-op classes, community college dual enrollment, online courses through VLACS, or a community music program — document these in the portfolio. Include any completion certificates, course descriptions, or grade reports. These demonstrate breadth of learning and strengthen the portfolio considerably.
Unschooling at middle school: If your approach is primarily interest-led or unstructured, the subject summary is your most important tool. It translates real-world learning into the statutory subject categories. A twelve-year-old who spent the year building a computer game: that is mathematics (geometry, logic), language arts (documentation, writing code narratives), science (computational thinking), and potentially history if the game had a historical theme. The subject summary is where you make that connection explicit for the evaluator.
The "commensurate with ability" standard: If your child is working below grade level — whether due to a learning difference, late start to formal academics, or their individual developmental timeline — the portfolio should reflect their actual trajectory, not an idealized grade-level standard. An evaluator cannot legally use the results of a portfolio review to terminate your home education program under RSA 193-A:6. The portfolio exists to document progress relative to the child's own baseline, not to rank them against a classroom cohort.
