Washington County's Educational Context

Washington County Unified experienced one of the steepest enrollment drops in Utah during the 2025–2026 school year — a 4.5% decline was cited among the most severely affected major districts. This is partly demographic (smaller birth cohorts from declining fertility rates statewide) and partly driven by families actively choosing alternatives.

The families moving into Washington County from California and Nevada tend to arrive skeptical of large public school systems. For a 10-student St. George microschool, private school registration adds $20,000 in annual scholarship funding compared to the home-based tier ($8,000 vs. $6,000 per student). That difference can pay your facilitator's full salary.

Finding Space in St. George

Washington County's lower cost of living compared to the Wasatch Front makes location logistics more manageable. Several paths work well here:

• Home-based pods — SB 13 and HB 126 protect home-based microschools from commercial building code requirements in all zoning districts, including St. George's residential zones. If your home has standard residential egress, the city cannot require commercial retrofits.
