How to Start a Microschool in Illinois

Step 1: Understand Your Legal Foundation
Before you file anything or invite a single family, understand how Illinois law classifies what you're doing.
Under Section 26-1 of the Illinois School Code (105 ILCS 5/26-1), children are exempt from compulsory public school attendance if they attend a private or parochial school. That's straightforward. Step 4: Find Your Families
The Illinois microschool parent tends to fit one of three profiles.
