SAT and AP Exams Singapore: Score Requirements for NUS, NTU, and SMU

If your child is pursuing a US High School Diploma or an international curriculum for Singapore university admissions, the SAT, ACT, and Advanced Placement examinations are not optional extras — they are core credential components that determine whether an application is even considered by NUS, NTU, and SMU. Understanding what scores are required, which tests to prioritise, and how to register and sit these exams in Singapore will prevent costly timing mistakes.

Why SAT and AP Scores Matter for Singapore University Admissions

Singapore's autonomous universities do not have a homogeneous approach to standardised testing. The role of SAT, ACT, and AP scores depends heavily on the qualification the applicant is presenting and which university they are applying to.

For applicants presenting a US High School Diploma as their primary qualification, SAT or ACT scores are mandatory at every local autonomous university. The diploma alone — without standardised test scores — is not sufficient for assessment. NUS, NTU, and SMU all require SAT or ACT results to be submitted directly from College Board or ACT Inc. via official score reporting. Scores reported on a self-prepared transcript are not accepted.

AP exam scores serve a different function: they substitute for subject-specific prerequisites. For courses requiring evidence of advanced Mathematics (Engineering, Computing, Sciences), an AP Calculus BC score of 4 or 5 provides that evidence where the high school curriculum alone cannot. Similarly, AP Chemistry or AP Physics scores substitute for the chemistry and physics prerequisites required at subject level for Medicine, Life Sciences, and Engineering courses.

For applicants with completed A-Level results (whether through a JC or as a SEAB private candidate), SAT and ACT scores are generally not required by NUS or NTU when actual results — not predicted grades — are available. However, if the application relies on predicted grades or preliminary AS-Level results rather than finalized A-Level marks, SAT or ACT scores become mandatory at NUS, and the applicant is automatically barred from applying to hyper-competitive programmes including Medicine, Law, and Dentistry.

SAT Score Requirements at NUS, NTU, and SMU

The table below reflects the minimum and competitive score benchmarks as published in institutional admissions policies or established through official communications:

NUS: NUS does not publish a single SAT minimum score as a universal baseline for international qualification applicants. However, the expectation is clear from the competitive context: applicants from the US Diploma route who are admitted to NUS typically present scores above 1450. For competitive Science, Engineering, and Business programmes, the functional competitive threshold is closer to 1500 or above. An ACT composite of 29 or above is the published minimum standard.

NTU: NTU publishes a minimum SAT score of 1250 for applicants presenting international qualifications, with an ACT minimum of 30. These are floor scores — applicants at the minimum are not competitive for popular courses. Competitive applicants for NTU's STEM and Business programmes typically present SAT scores of 1400 or above.

SMU: SMU is the most explicit of the three universities. It requires a minimum SAT score of 1350 for most degree programmes. The ACT minimum is 29. For Law, the reading and writing components of the SAT are scrutinised more closely in addition to the composite score. SMU also requires a Home School Supplement for applicants from non-institutional backgrounds, which must be submitted alongside the standardised test scores.

SIT: Singapore Institute of Technology requires SAT, ACT, or IELTS for applicants presenting international curricula, with a minimum ACT composite of 29. SIT's focus on polytechnic diploma holders means the standardised testing pathway is less developed, but scores are mandatory for non-diploma international applicants.

SAT Test Centres in Singapore

SAT exams are administered in Singapore through College Board-approved test centres. The main locations in Singapore include:

  • Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) — one of the most common SAT centres
  • Singapore American School — frequently used by international school students
  • Various other approved school venues across the island

SAT test dates in Singapore follow the global College Board calendar. In the 2025-26 test year, the digital SAT is administered in March, May, June, August, October, and November. The August, October, and November dates are relevant for students applying to Singapore universities in the February application window, as scores need to be reported by the application deadline.

Registration opens approximately four to five weeks before each test date through the College Board website (collegeboard.org). Late registration is available with an additional fee but is not reliable. For popular test dates — particularly the October and November sittings before the February application window — early registration is essential as seats at Singapore centres fill quickly.

ACT Test Centres in Singapore

The ACT is less widely administered in Singapore than the SAT, but it is fully accepted by NUS, NTU, and SMU as an equivalent alternative. ACT test centres in Singapore include Singapore American School and a smaller number of other approved venues.

ACT registration is handled through the ACT website (act.org). The test is offered in September, October, December, February, April, and June internationally. For Singapore university applicants, the September, October, and December sittings are the most relevant for the February application window.

The choice between SAT and ACT is a matter of student preference and strength profile. The SAT's digital format and evidence-based reading emphasis suits students who are strong in analytical reading and mathematics. The ACT's Science Reasoning section suits students who process data quickly and have strong test-pacing discipline. Sitting one full-length practice test for each is the most reliable way to identify which format a student scores better on before committing to a preparation programme.

AP Exam Registration in Singapore

Advanced Placement exams are administered annually in May. Registration in Singapore is managed through a student's school if they are enrolled in an AP-offering school, or independently through a designated AP exam coordinator if they are homeschooled or not enrolled in an AP-offering institution.

Homeschooled students in Singapore who wish to sit AP exams independently must contact the College Board's AP Services for Students to identify a participating school willing to act as a testing site. This process should begin in October or November of the year before the May examinations, as testing centres must confirm availability and the student must register through the AP Course Audit process or as an exam-only candidate.

AP Calculus BC and AP Physics (C: Mechanics or C: Electricity and Magnetism) are the most strategically valuable AP subjects for Singapore university applicants targeting STEM courses. These subjects satisfy the calculus and physics prerequisites required by NTU Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Physics programmes. AP Calculus BC is particularly important because it covers the equivalent of two semesters of university calculus — a higher standard than AP Calculus AB.

AP Chemistry and AP Biology are required supporting evidence for Medicine, Life Sciences, and related programmes at NUS and NTU. Competitive applicants to these programmes typically present both AP subjects.

For business and social science programmes, AP Economics (Micro and/or Macro) and AP Statistics provide useful supporting evidence, though they are less frequently treated as hard prerequisites. AP English Language and Composition or AP English Literature demonstrates language and analytical competency, which is relevant for SMU applications in particular.

How Many AP Exams Do You Need?

The question of how many AP exams to sit is often framed incorrectly. The correct question is: how many AP exams are required as prerequisites for your target courses, and which scores support the overall application most effectively?

For NTU STEM programmes, at least two relevant AP subjects are typically required. For NUS, the requirement depends on the specific faculty — the admissions requirements page for each programme specifies the subject prerequisites. For SMU, AP scores are part of a holistic review rather than specific prerequisites.

Taking too many AP exams in a single year is counterproductive. A student who spreads preparation across six or seven subjects and achieves scores of 3 across the board is in a weaker position than one who concentrates on three or four subjects and achieves 4s and 5s. Universities assess AP results as evidence of subject mastery, not breadth. A score of 3 on AP Calculus BC does not demonstrate calculus competency at the level NTU requires for engineering admission.

Reporting Scores to Singapore Universities

SAT and ACT scores must be sent directly from College Board and ACT Inc. to the universities. Scores on self-prepared transcripts are not accepted. When registering for the SAT or ACT, add the relevant Singapore universities as score recipients using their institution codes. AP scores are also sent via College Board using institution codes.

NUS institution code for SAT/AP: 4667 NTU institution code for SAT/AP: 4669 SMU institution code for SAT/AP: 4668

These codes should be entered at registration or added through the College Board/ACT score reporting portal after receiving results.

Building the Timeline

For a student completing a US High School Diploma pathway and targeting Singapore university entry, the SAT and AP preparation timeline typically runs as follows:

  • Grade 10 (age 15-16): Begin SAT preparation, sit a first practice test for both SAT and ACT to identify the better format
  • Grade 11 (age 16-17): Sit the SAT or ACT for the first time (typically March or May); begin AP coursework in core subjects
  • Grade 12 (age 17-18): Retake SAT/ACT if needed; sit AP exams in May; apply to universities in February using finalized AP results from the previous May (available July)

The full year-by-year roadmap — including how standardised testing fits into the broader qualifications strategy, how to time applications around NS for male students, and how to sequence AP subjects against university prerequisite requirements — is laid out in the Singapore University Admissions Framework.

Strong SAT, ACT, and AP results are the clearest signal a US Diploma applicant can send to NUS, NTU, and SMU that the international qualification is substantive. Preparing strategically and registering early eliminates the risk of missed deadlines or insufficient test attempts before the application window opens.
